When there is a health crisis in the world around us, whether it is an epidemic like COVID-19 or the struggle to save lives in a village, only one name comes first, and that is the doctor. But have you ever thought that we should also get a chance to appreciate those doctors? Happy Doctors Day is one such occasion. To celebrate, honor, and say thank you.
Happy Doctors Day is celebrated every year on 1 July in India. It is not just a date but a feeling. This day is dedicated to Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, who was not only a great doctor but also the former Chief Minister of West Bengal and a Bharat Ratna awardee.
The theme of Happy Doctors Day in 2025 is that.
Behind the Mask: Who Heals the Healers?
That is, do we ever think about the emotional and mental health of those who heal us? And do we know that after the pandemic, 1 in every 3 doctors suffers from burnout, anxiety, or depression? Today is not just a day to send wishes but a day to understand that doctors are also human beings who have emotions, fatigue, and challenges.

Why is Happy Doctors Day 2025 special?
Doctors Day in 2025 is not just a formality but also a reminder of how vulnerable the people who protect us day and night are themselves. This year’s theme, “Behind the mask: Who heals the healers?” is a direct question for all of us. Do we talk about doctors’ fatigue, stress, and mental health? After the pandemic, burnout, depression, and anxiety have become common in the medical field. This year’s Doctors Day invites us not only to say thank you but also to understand, support, and respect them.
Contribution and legacy of Dr. B.C. Roy
Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy was not only a great doctor but also a visionary leader. He became the second Chief Minister of West Bengal and laid the foundation of the health infrastructure in the country. It was on his initiative that institutions like the IMA (Indian Medical Association), the MCI (Medical Council of India), and IIT Kharagpur came into being. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1961. And interestingly, he was both born and died on July 1. In 1991, India introduced Doctors Day in his memory. Dr. Roy’s legacy continues to be a symbol of medical ethics and social service.

What should be our responsibility towards doctors?
Doctors save lives every day, but are we making their lives easy? Our responsibility is not just to go to the clinic and treat them but to give them respect. Talking with respect, appreciating their work, and taking care of their privacy should be our basic responsibility. False allegations or news of violence on social media emotionally breaks doctors. Happy Doctors Day 2025 reminds us that to heal doctors, society must first become sensitive.
Inspiring Woman Doctor: The Story of Anandibai Joshi
Do you know that India’s first female doctor did an MD at the age of just 19? Anandibai Joshi went to America to pursue a medical degree in the 1880s. At that time, women were not allowed to leave the house. So she took this step when her child died within 10 days due to a lack of treatment. Anandibai was small, but her ideas were great. She died of TB at the age of 22, but her story still gives courage to girls to dream of becoming medical doctors.
World Doctors Day vs National Doctors Day
Many people think that Doctors Day is celebrated on a single day, but it is not so. World Doctors Day is celebrated on different dates in different countries. For example, in the US, it is on March 30. But in India, National Doctors Day is celebrated on July 1 in honor of Dr. BC Roy. The way it is celebrated may be different in every country, but the feeling of respect for doctors is universal.

Such messages can be sent on WhatsApp, Instagram, or as a handwritten card, as even a ‘thank you’ can change someone’s day.
Meaning of the 2025 theme
This theme is a question, a voice for those doctors who forget themselves in the pain of others. After the pandemic, the job of the doctor is not only to treat the patients but also to handle himself from emotional breakdown. Through this theme, a gentle reminder is being given to the medical system that if the healers do not get well, the system itself will get tired. Doctors Day 2025 allows us to understand and correct this imbalance.
